Michael-Ann
Russell JCC Wins NFL Reebok Flag Football World Title
The
Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center in North Miami
Beach, FL came fired up and ready to play when they represented
the USA in the 2004 NFL Reebok Flag Football World Championship
in Vancouver, Canada. Their 48-17 victory over Mexico make
the Mo Steel MAR JCC 14-year-olds flag-football champions
of the world. The JCC’s Mo Steel Flag Football Team
put in lots of practice time, hard work and effort on route
to the fifth annual World Championship, under the coaching
of the JCC’s Youth Sports Director David Fried, the
team management of Dr. Mitch Grabois, and the sponsorship
of Mo Steel Company.
The Mo
Steelers intercepted the ball from Mexico’s Las Aguilas
on the game’s opening play, ran the ball back for a
touchdown, and never looked back. Team USA coach, David Fried,
was quoted as saying, “I was very confident in my guys.
We've been through three years and more than 300 games together.
We really wanted to win today and we went out and got it.
Without Reebok and the NFL none of this would have been possible,
so we are extremely grateful to them."
The JCC
Association NFL Flag program provides an opportunity for kids
and families to become involved in football through participation
early in life. It helps nurture the first phase of player
and coach development by teaching football skills to boys
and girls as young as six, while structuring the first level
of a feeder system to community tackle programs. Last year,
a total of 53 JCCs participated in the program, which was
a 50 percent increase from the year before.
The Mo
Steel MAR JCC competed against teams from China, Spain, Germany,
Austria, Canada, Japan, Korea and Thailand, and went an impressive
5-0 before heading into the championship game. “It was
an excellent learning experience for our kids to socialize
with other 14 and 15-year-olds from around the world,”
said Gary Bomzer, executive director, Michael-Ann Russell
JCC.
