The Coca-Cola Company® Funds JCC Association/Coca-Cola Day of Caring/Day of Sharing Program for Summer Camps

JCC Association, through the generous sponsorship of The Coca-Cola Company®, is once more offering camps the opportunity to participate in the JCC Association/Coca Cola Day of Caring/Day of Sharing program. Following the success of last year’s program at 16 camps, The Coca-Cola Company® increased its grant to the Day of Caring/Day of Sharing program, and it has more than doubled in size this year. Thirty-six resident and day camps have been awarded grants to fund activities and projects focusing on improving the world we live in. To help ground the Day of Caring/Day of Sharing activities in Jewish values, JCC Association’s Mandel Center for Jewish Education has developed companion curricular units about the responsibility of each child to make a positive contribution to our world. The project will be enriched with additional curricular units for each of the next four years.

Patterned on the Day of Caring/Day of Sharing projects at the JCC Maccabi Games each August, participating camps spend a day working on service activities that contribute to the welfare of the community. “From The Coca-Cola Company's perspective, this program is not only a way to enhance the values of our youth, but also a way for them to give back to local communities,” said Quinton Martin, vice-president of community marketing, Coca Cola North America. “They learn the meaning of caring for one another, of sharing, of being responsible, and of becoming leaders of today’s younger generation.”

JCC Association and The Coca Cola Company have had a long-standing and very positive relationship. The Coca Cola Company has been a continental sponsor of the JCC Maccabi Games® for over 14 years. JCC Association is very proud of Coca Cola's support, and is particularly pleased to be able to add this meaningful dimension to the camping experience.

Camp directors have organized a variety of activities and programs in order to include as many campers as possible. For example, campers at Camp Interlaken (Milwaukee, WI) will take part in a two-day camping experience intended to illuminate the connections that exist between cultures. On the first day, campers from Interlaken will come together with those from Camp Helen Brachman, which accommodates inner-city Milwaukee youth. Life experiences will be shared, facilitating an atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding. Since both of the camps are situated in an area of Wisconsin filled with Native American reservations, the second day will consist of a fitting community service project. The project will serve to illustrate the benefits of cross-cultural kindness.

For one week, the campers of the JCC in Louisville, KY will take part in what will be called Community Service Camp. The volunteer services will include cleaning rivers and community gardens, planting trees, working in nursing homes, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, and preparing meals for the homeless and for families of critically ill children. Through both hands-on activities and use of the curriculum, campers and staff will learn the Jewish values and principles of acts of kindness (gemilut chasidim), charity (tzedakah), and repairing the world (tikun olam).
