Naomi Marks Participated in
Leadership Seminar at Brandeis University
Naomi Marks, director of teen services and
JCC Maccabi Israel for JCC Association, participated in the
annual Kaplan Seminar for Emerging Professionals at Brandeis
University in Waltham, Massachusetts in July, 2005.
The Kaplan Seminar is a three-day summer institute for up
to 24 outstanding Jewish communal professionals who have been
in the field for five to ten years. To be considered for the
seminar, participants must be nominated by their agency directors.
Part of what makes this seminar unique is that participants
come from all the areas of Jewish communal service –
federations, JCCs, Hillel, community relations, the religious
movements, Jewish education, youth work, elder services, and
independent fundraising – and from local, regional and
national offices. "This was a special treat for me, as
I have been on the faculty of the seminar for 10 years,”
said Allan Finkelstein, president of JCC Association. “This
was the first time that a JCC Association staff member participated."
Seminar sessions, such as “Risk Taking and Leadership”
and “Creating an Innovative Culture,” addressed
challenging issues leaders face in their work. “The
sessions were a great mix of theory and interaction,”
stated one of the participants.
Seminar faculty included Professor Sherry Israel of the Hornstein
Program in Jewish Communal Service at Brandeis, Allan Finkelstein,
Howard Charish, executive vice- president of UJA Federation
of Northern New Jersey, and Professor Susan Shevitz, director
of the Hornstein Program.
This interactive training course, formerly known as the Sherman
Seminar, has been renamed the Kaplan Seminar for Emerging
Professionals in honor of the generosity of Edward and Irene
Kaplan. Ed Kaplan is the chair of the board of JCC Association.
Irene Kaplan is the general campaign chair for Jewish Federation
of Greater Washington.
The sessions were inspiring and thought-provoking,”
said one participant. “I’m energized and motivated
to go back to work and get to it!"
