JCC MACCABI ISRAEL PLANS HANUKKAH TRIP TO JEWISH STATE

BASKETBALL LINKS AMERICAN AND ISRAELI TEENS

A defining sense of place is pretty hard to come by these days. In this rapidly changing world, people are finding it more difficult to feel connected. It is in response to this trend that JCC Maccabi Israel has organized its first-ever basketball trip to Israel. “We want kids to feel connected to Israel,” said Adinah East, JCC Maccabi Israel continental coordinator. “We want them to think of it as their second home, and the best way to do that is to let them experience it firsthand--the similarities, the likenesses.”

Basketball can most definitely be counted among those similarities. Vying with soccer for the title of national sport, basketball inspires the same sort of rabid enthusiasm in Israel as it does in America. No wonder, then, that JCC Maccabi Israel decided to build a trip around it. “It’s all about making a connection,” said JCC Maccabi Games Senior Olympics Advisor Kenny Silverboard, “and it’s the basketball aspect of the trip that will get them there.”

As with all JCC Maccabi Israel trips, the primary focus will be on Israel: its people, its history, and its culture, of which basketball is now a part. The trip will also take place over Hanukkah, giving teens ages 15-17 the unique opportunity to experience Hanukkah in Israel.
