JCC Association's Steve Becker Named to Board of National Council of Youth Sports
New York , NY , June 20, 2008 Steve Becker, director, health and wellness services for JCC Association, has been elected to serve on the board of directors of the National Council for Youth Sports (NCYS). The Stuart, Florida-based organization, whose members represent more than 52 million youngsters in organized sports nationwide, is a longstanding partner of JCC Association in promoting youth fitness and safety.
In Becker's work with NCYS, he has helped promote the organization's annual STRIVE (Sports, Teach Respect, Initiative, Values, Excellence) Award to recognize the most outstanding sports & recreation administrators, coaches and volunteers on both national and local levels, and participates in selection of the award-winners from among nominations submitted to JCC Association by local JCCs. In noting JCC Association support for another of NCYS's key initiatives, the NCSI: National Center for Safety Initiatives, Becker said that this year, the JCC Maccabi Games® were among the first youth sports programs to mandate criminal background checks of all coaches and delegation heads. Becker was in the pilot class of the NCYS program in Certified Sports Administration, a six-course curriculum developed by the George Washington University 's Sports Management Department and now offered online through JCC Association. He is currently the interim director for the JCC Maccabi Games.
Their mission aligns with what ours has historically been in the realm of sports and wellness, which is to promote youth sports and healthy lifestyles and to create a safe opportunity for all children to participate. That's why we've been partners for so long, and it is an honor to be selected to be on their board, said Becker.
Sally S. Johnson, CSA, the executive director of NCYS, wrote to Becker in a letter of congratulations, We believe your professionalism and dedicated service to youth sports will bring experience, fresh ideas and new energy to the NCYS board of directors.
Becker joined JCC Association following years in the field, first at the Westside JCC in Los Angeles and then at the Marcus JCC in Atlanta . During the 15 years he spent in Los Angeles, as high school swim coach, Becker coached four-time Olympic gold medalist Lenny Krayzelburg, as well as the U.S. Junior Swim Team for the Pan-Am Maccabiah and World Maccabi Games.
As health and wellness director at JCC Association, Becker is the continental point person for sports, recreation and aquatics programming and professional development for the JCC Movement's more than 350 JCC, YM-YWHA and day and overnight summer camp sites in the U.S. and Canada . One of his goals is to help develop an all-encompassing initiative to address youth obesity, beginning at the preschool level.
A graduate of UCLA, Becker was inducted into the South California Youth Sports Hall of Fame in 1997. He is also a certified personal trainer and a CPR First aid WSI Instructor.
